“Wait. Wait. I do it. Okay. Wait” ( Okay wait, I’ll do it) A Thai staff approached upon noticing us while we were about to fix our seat as we got on the train excitedly and found our bed numbers. Ah, sleeper train it is! Finally! I said to myself.
Oh, Okay, sorry. We answered smilingly.
I and my boyfriend sheepishly looked at each other. I guess we were too pep up! Yes, we were! So we just lounged a bit and waited until the train started off its engine. We couldn’t wait! The sleeper train is one of our top lists on this journey around Thailand. It was getting late, our departure time was scheduled at 10 pm.
Apparently, the staff earlier had reached our seat and bed numbers and begun to magically assemble the seats into a bed! He didn’t say a word, he just accomplished his job well while I was right behind watching and waiting for him to finish. He’s an expert! Not only in forming the seats into a bed, covering our pillows with cases but as well as closing the curtains to guarantee a privacy.
When he’s eventually finished, we plunked down ourselves on our bed, it’s bunk bed, one bed up and down. We allocated our luggage on the top bed and closed the curtain.
He was probably confused why we stored our luggage on the top bed and then we were sleeping in one bed so suddenly he asked,
What’s your bed number?
7 & 8. I answered.
Oh, okay, okay.
After he secured the answer, he didn’t ask again and continued fixing the other seats and beds for other passengers.
And then I thought and said to my boyfriend, “ By any chance, would it be okay to just buy one ticket for two people since anyway, we’re only using one bed? ” We both had no idea. Anyhow, we bought two tickets just to make sure we won’t be thrown out of the train if we couldn’t provide them tickets for two!
Taddaa! Here’s the before and after photo inside the special sleeper train
And then an average woman staff approached us to take our orders for breakfast.
” You Thai? Philippines? You not Thai because you beautiful and speak English well ” I was overwhelmed by her and so I smiled back and said,
Yes, I’m Filipina. From the Philippines.
Okay, okay, what you want breakfast? I bring to you tomorrow at 8 am okay? I help you make table. Tomorrow payment. ( Okay, what do you want breakfast? I’ll bring you tomorrow at 8 am, don’t worry, I’ll help you make your table and you can pay tomorrow)
Yes, sure. Thank you very much!
Finally, we nestled and put ourselves up to sleep!
In the morning the next day, we overheard her chattering around the alley on the train, though our curtains were still closed, she peeped a little so we handed her our payment. After which, we went back to sleep for one more hour as Chris was still feeling bad.
We had breakfast on the table next to our bed as offered by her and was also available. I had rice porridge, a piece of banana, a muffin and a cup of coffee while Chris had a sandwich, a piece of banana and a glass of juice.
We enjoyed the view on board while having our meal. Now, this is what you call a very cool experience!
With all of these experiences on board, I must say there are probably more interesting reasons why the sleeper train to Chiang Mai has been so popular to all travelers. But honestly speaking, there’s something greatly special with the sleeper train itself along with the sense of comfort. Yes. It’s totally comfortable. What more? Of course, we’re traveling together and we did actually sleep on one single bed! We have been really looking forward to the sleeper train! Isn’t it lovely?
And although the trip took us 14 hours in total, it felt like just a couple of hours. The sleeper train staff were also courteous that they’re acquainted on how to perform their job well without so many spoken words. As for the bed, it was compressible enough to put us sleep soundly.
And if your concern is safety and security, I would say it’s fair enough to have a common sense to take with you at all times, you’re constrained to look after your valuable items.
Did you ask how much?
Well, for us two, it cost 1,502 Baht. See the photo below.
The sleeper train’s upper bed is a hundred baht cheaper than the lower bed.
How to get there?
We didn’t book online though you can do it as one of the options. While we were still on Koh Chang island, we phoned some travel agencies if they have some available tickets just because we fret that we might run out of tickets for the night. Luckily, tickets were still being sold in the market! We took the 10pm schedule to give allowance to meeting my friend Tish and her boyfriend but unfortunately, it didn’t happen! ( But we’ll meet in Hanoi next month, for sure!) You can get here by taking the taxi from wherever you are to Hua Lamphong train station.
And since we arrived early and our train was departing 5 hours later, we grabbed a bite and had some drinks at 511 cafe, it’s just a few minutes walk outside the train station. You could kill time here while waiting for your boarding. There are also a mini store, a coffee shop and some small food shops inside.
I hope you’ll also enjoy the ride as much as we did! It was totally worth it and now we figured why the sleeper train to Chiang Mai is not only popular, special but also fun and worth all the hours!
And since you’re heading out to Chiang Mai and perhaps have no idea yet on what to do or want to add an exciting activity on your list, you can try to visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. just click this link and see all the details inside!
And yey! We arrived in Chiang Mai!
Just a friendly tip and reminder.
Once you’re in Chiang Mai and looking for a ride to your hotel, just walk directly outside the train station and look for the 50baht each taxi ride.
Have fun! ♡
